In 1947 a few of the great names in film ? Charles Laughton, David Lean, Carol Read, Alexander Korda and Roger Manvell ? founded the British Film Academy. In 1958, they merged with The Guild of Television Producers and Directors to form The Society of Film and Television and, in 1976, they became known as The British Academy of Film and Television Arts or, BAFTA.

The BAFTA mask is now regarded as one of the most coveted awards in the moving image industry and judging panelists, who make up the academy body, come from various industry backgrounds - each one being a recognized expert in his or her field.

The coveted BAFTA mask is awarded to individuals who have reached extraordinary heights of their profession and include:

BAFTA?s main office is in London, but there are also branches in Northern England, Scotland, Wales, New York City and Los Angeles.

The Academy trophies awarded each year - in the form of theatrical masks - were designed by American sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe in 1955.

Since 1989, the Los Angeles branch of BAFTA holds its own awards ceremony each year, called the ?Britannia Awards.?

The British BAFTA awards ceremony is televised each year by BBC One and in 2007, they were staged at the Royal Opera House for the first time, having taken place since 2000 in the well known Odeon Cinema on Leicester Square.

The BAFTA ceremony now takes place in February each year in order to precede the Oscars and the awards are mostly open to all nationalities, though there is an award for Best British Film and Best Newcomer.
