The Melbourne games are the 8th games since the event was renamed in 1978 (the earlier version was known as the British Commonwealth Games, itself a product of the old Empire Games held between members of the former British Empire). Australia last hosted the games in Brisbane in 1982. Other previous hosts of the games include Canada, Scotland and New Zealand.
