Epsom Derby Betting

Believe it or not the Epsom Derby is the oldest horse race in the world. It was first run in 1780, over 225 years ago! The inaugural winner was Diomed watched by a handful of friends of the 12th Earl of Derby, Edward Smith-Stanley, who arranged the event.

Now, on the first weekend of June each year of the horse racing calendar, this race, made up of the world's finest racehorses, attracts thousands of keen punters and the world's most renowned trainers and in-form horses. It's a wonderfully festive Horse Racing Betting occasion where food, champagne and high fashion are the order of the day. Epsom Ladies Day takes centre stage in the "Style on the Downs" fashion competition with prizes for the most stylishly dressed.

Epsom Betting and Facilities

The most exclusive area at Epsom Downs Racecourse is the Queen's Stand opposite the winning post. Here, everything is first class - from the champagne and seafood bars, cold snack areas, to the members restaurant and private suites which include full tote betting facilities. Queen's Stand members also have access to the Paddock and the Winner's Circle.

The Grandstand affords racegoers good views of the Paddock and The Downs. Here there are bars, hot and cold snacks, many betting outlets, and music and entertainment which provide a fun and relaxed atmosphere. As there is easy access to the Parade Ring and the Rails Bookmakers, this is a perfect area for groups enjoying a day out.

There is also the very popular Tattenham Picnic area which has now been extended and moved closer to the Grandstand. This exclusive area, reserved for racegoers buying the Tattenham Picnic Package, provided by Carluccio's, provides the perfect setting for this great race. Picnickers also have access to the Tattenham Straight Enclosure with its many bars, food areas and bookmakers.

People also flock to The Hill - the centre of the Epsom Downs course - which is now famous for its lively party atmosphere. There's a market, funfair and live music concert, which continues after the racing, as well as food, bars and bookmaker facilities.

The Epsom Contenders:

Epsom Derby Betting sees punters wager on a Group 1 race open to three-year-old colts and fillies but in recent times, the Derby has almost always been contested by colts. In preparation for the Epsom Derby, many contenders race in one or more of the recognised Derby Trials. Derby Stakes winners will often go on to compete in major international races later in the year, such as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France and the Breeders' Cup in the United States.

Epsom Derby Previous Winners:

Over the years, some of the most famous racehorses have won the Epsom Derby. Two of these, winners from the seventies and eighties, were Nijinsky and of course the great Shergar, who was later kidnapped and never found again. Also, one of the greatest jockeys of all time, Lester Pigott, has won the race an incredible nine times - a record he'll probably hold onto for many years to come.
