Joe Calzaghe, nickname Pride of Wales/Italian Dragon, was born in Hammersmith, South London on March 23rd 1972. He has become one of our best ever fighters. Joe was brought up in Newbridge, Wales, son of a Welsh Mother and Sardinian Father, Enzo Calzaghe who later became his trainer and greatest supporter.
Joe started boxing in the ring at the tender age of nine. He holds the record for being the only British boxer to hold three Amateur Boxing Association titles at three different weights.
Calzaghe's Professional Career
He began his professional career at Cardiff Arms Park in 1993, the same time and place Frank Bruno was at the top of his game. He did very well, winning all his fights and became Young Boxer of the year in 1995 from the Professional Boxing Association. But even so the exposure and recognition wasn't there, he needed some titled fights but there wasn't a sign of one, so in 1996 he left his management team of Terry Lawless and Micky Duff and joined up with the promoter, Frank Warren's Sports Network this proved to be a sure bet for success.
Great Boxing
His epic 12 round fight against Chris Eubank on 11th October 1997 at Sheffield earned him the WBO Super World Middleweight Boxing Crown giving Wales a new champion. He had a very surprised Chris Eubank, (who thought this was going to be an easy victory) on the canvas in the first round and from then on with youth on his side and his ever powerful punches proved just too much for the experienced Eubank.
But the next few years saw a slump in his success mainly due to hand injuries affecting his style. But he battled on and in August 2000 he won his fight against Omar Sheika after a knockout in the fifth round. Success continued with victories over Will McIntyre, Mario Velt, Richie Woodhall, Tocker Pudwell and Byron Mitchell.
In September he successfully defended his Super Middleweight title against Evans Ashira even though he fractured his left hand in the third round.
In Manchester 2006 saw Joe up against the great American fighting machine of Jeff Lacey with the great left hook. This wasn't going to be an easy fight but Joe stood his ground and battled it out for 12 rounds and won on a unanimous point decision. He took home the Super Middleweight IBF title.
