Next Tory Leader Betting

Ok so the Tories are at it again. So that means that bets are being taken (again) on who can be the first leader since Thatcher to inspire the centre right out of their malaise and regain the central ground from New Labour. As always in Conservative Leadership campaigns the front runner will end up losing so bets on the Tory Party Leadership Contest offers great value betting.

Tory Leadership Contenders 2005

  1. David Cameron - The New Party Favourite. The housewives like him from what we gather, this will automatically alienate the male part of the party. This may not prove to be a large problem with historically every Conservative election result showing more women than men voting for the Tories- apart from the last. Seen by many as charming, non-threatening and telegenic - which are his strengths - Cameron can also be lampooned as a "risotto-munching, Notting Hill toff". In an age where the Tory leader will have to modernise the party away from the shires and into the cities this may play against him.

  2. David Davis - The previous Front runner but it looks like the young guns are snapping at his heels already. His showing at the recent party conference was miserable. And with going which was as good as in Blackpool Davis could have romped it. But with a lacklustre display following a bright start his chances may be dead. Still Davis is the favourite amongst Tory MPs but the party faithful have lost confidence in him. He is full of self-confidence ,ruthless ambition and has a keen tactical sense; all necessary qualities for leadership. What is unproven is whether he has the team-making and strategic skills to build a succesful opposition and convert this into a government.

  3. Ken Clarke - As the "Tories" biggest beast" (his claim not ours) he believes that his time has finally come. Every time there is a leadership contest Ken Clarke stands and every time he fails; this time is likely to be no different. He is probably the one leadership contender who voters would find least problematic. Though the Euro-sceptic wing will continue to ensure his dreams will be thwarted well before the final firlong. At conference his speech was honest but not polished and for the Tories this will be a problem. Being a man of substance is probably not enough in the age of twenty four hour media coverage.

Those we feel should stand for the Tory Leadership

  1. Darth Vader - He was accepted into the Conservative Party in the 1990s as a stunt for "The Friday Night Armistice". Has the leadership skills that the Tories have lacked since the demise of Thatcher and those Jedi mind tricks could be useful. How he would fare against Obi Wan Blairobe is anyones guess!

  2. Jeffrey Archer - People seem to like his books and his wife appeals to the Tory faithful. Would be able to offer an insightful perspective to the legal system, crime and punishment and education.

  3. Giles Brandreth - Love the Jumpers , could bring some color back into politics.

  4. Mrs Thatcher - as a party obsessed with tradition and the past what better way to embrace it than by dusting the cobwebs off, plugging in the flux capacitor and going back to the future of 1979. A time the tories felt surest in their conviction that they were the party of government.

No matter the leader do the British feel that they are electable... improbable but if our gracious leader is found out for any more porkies or his wife wins their marital debate on terror laws the party could be inelectable before the proclomation of Brown moving to Number 10. Having said that he already lives at number 10 Tony wanted it for the wife and kids as it"s bigger. Happy Betting
