The Nobel Peace Prize is the largest, and certainly the most well known, of the peace prizes that are awarded throughout the world, and the only one that gains the bookmaker"s attention. This is a not-insignificant event in the specials betting calendar, and one could say that it is one of the few wagers you can make about a good cause. Well apart from the fact that, during its 100 years history, Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini have all been nominated for the prize, and the man who gave it its name invented dynamite!

The Nobel Prizes have been awarded since 1901, after the wealthy philanthropist Alfred Nobel left provision in his will for part of his fortune to be used for awards in five key areas of human endeavor. The five categories for Nobel Prizes are in literature, chemistry, physics, medicine, and peace. The peace prize however, is the most famous of the Nobels, and has been won over the years by figures like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Henry Kissinger, and Yasser Arafat. Organisations can also qualify for the prize, and past winners include the Red Cross and Amnesty International.

As far as bookmakers go, not all will cover the event but those that do generally offer fixed odds for a win by selected individuals who have generally promoted peace or concord between nations.

Nobel Peace Prize 2006

The 2006 Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded on the 1st of October in Oslo. Unfortunately, nominations for the prize remain secret, which makes predictions a little more difficult, but favourites for this year include Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, UN diplomat Martti Ahtisaari, Vietnamese Buddhist leader Thich Quang Do, women"s rights activist Rebiya Kadeer, and Jeff Halper. Bob Geldoff and Bono are also touted due to their work with Live Aid and Live8, and organisations like Oxfam and Save the Children remain outside possibilities.
