Olympics Betting

The Olympic Games is the pinnacle of many sports. Steeped in tradition and staged once every four years athletes gear their preparations towards these games. The first Summer Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896, while the inaugural Winter Olympic Games were staged in France in 1924.

Until 1992 the Summer and Winter Olympic Games were held in the same year but from then on they have been held biannually. The Summer Games include sports as diverse as diving and table tennis, from 100metre sprints to Greco-Roman style wrestling. The Winter Games incorporate sports such as Figure Skating, Curling, Biathlon and Luge.

Olympics Betting is available on all of these events, although some bookmakers do tend to offer more in-depth coverage than others. The major events such as athletics, tennis and football tend to attract the most attention from punters. But the niche sports also generate plenty of Sports Betting interest, specifically when there is UK representation.

Summer Olympics Betting

One of the main Summer Olympics betting events is the Men’s 100 metres. In recent history stars such as Linford Christie, Carl Lewis and Maurice Green grabbed the headlines, now the discipline is all about one man, a certain Usain Bolt, who stole the show at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing with his 9.69 World Record run. A Gold medal that he doubled up with the 200 metres title then completed the hat-trick in the 4x100 metres relay.

Tennis at the Summer Olympics is also popular, and although it doesn’t carry as much prestige as the other Grand Slam events it is considered as part of the Golden Slam. A player who wins all four of tennis’s Grand Slam events – Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open – plus the Olympics, is said to have achieved a Career Golden Slam. To this point only three players have achieved this feat; Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal.

It is anticipated that the advent of a Great Britain team will make Football Betting much more popular amongst Olympic Betting at the 2012 Olympic Games. Cycling betting is also a popular Olympics betting sport, following on the back of the great success that Team GB have had in the sport in recent years.

Winter Olympics Betting

In the UK at least, Winter Olympics Betting is not as popular as its summertime cousin. Largely due to the fact that winter sports are much less popular on the British Isles than those that are included in the summer games.

That isn’t to say that Winter Olympics betting isn’t available. Sports such as Ice Hockey generate great interest throughout Scandinavia while Biathlon and Skiing events also generate plenty of Olympics betting interest.
