Ascot History

Royal Ascot has a rich, 300 year heritage and is one of the great sporting venues in England and hosts the finest race horses in the world during the Horse Racing Betting calendar. In 1711, whilst out riding not far from Windsor Castle, Queen Anne came upon an area of open heath that looked an ideal place for "horses to gallop at full stretch". The first race meeting took place on Saturday 11 August 1711 and the prize was 100 guineas.

The origin of the Royal Meeting seems to have begun with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. The Gold Cup day remains the feature of the third day of Royal Ascot. It is more popularly known as "Ladies Day" and draws huge crowds famous for the extravagant ladies' hats and the formal attire of racegoers.

Her Majesty The Queen, a keen race horse owner and breeder, has had great success with her own horses at Ascot. Her Majesty's horses can be distinguished by The Queen's racing colours worn by her jockeys - purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves and black velvet cap with gold fringe.
