Super Bowl Betting 2008

The Superbowl, the premier event in the American Football betting calendar, is one of the worlds greatest sporting events and, as well as causing the entire United States to almost grind to a halt, is watched by almost one billion viewers in over two hundred and twenty countries.

Super Bowl History

The event has been running annually since 1967 and is the championship prize of the National Football League (NFL). It is the culmination of a series of games played between twelve teams from the two conferences of the NFL, six from the American Football Conference (AFC) and six from the National Football Conference (NFC). You can therefore understand why it's become the leading crowd puller in American Football Betting. Each conference is divided into North, South, East and West divisions and it is the winners of these divisions plus two runners-up from each conference which go into the final knockout round.

The Growth of Super Bowl Betting

Superbowl betting is becoming increasingly popular among UK sports followers as well as American Football betting in general. Many online bookmakers cater for this growing market and generous offers are available for those wishing to open accounts.

The Superbowl is an event of gigantic proportion in all kinds of ways. U2, Michael Jackson, James Brown and Aerosmith have all played there in the half-time show. More toilets are flushed at half-time than at any other time of the year. Fewer people get married on Superbowl day than any other while three thousand journalists write ten million words of copy about the match. .5 million is the asking price for a thirty-second TV commercial during the game with those watching opting to eat six thousand tons of crisps and twenty four thousand tons of guacamole while those attending the game eat five miles of hot dogs. Don't even ask how much beer is drunk. Unsurprisingly, the next day six percent of all Americans call in sick for work.

The Superbowl is played in a different city each year and venues are decided many years in advance. The next Superbowl, the XLII, or the 42nd, for those who opted for metalwork rather than classical studies, will be played in Glendale, Arizona, at the new home of the Cardinals - the University of Phoenix Stadium, on Sunday, February 3. The San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, and Pittsburgh Steelers have each won five Superbowls.

New blood for the Super Bowl

American Football recruits new players using an interesting method called 'The Draft'. Each year in April, representatives of all 32 teams gather at Madison Square Gardens to sign up the best players emerging from college football. To ensure a relative uniform strength of each team from season to season, the team with the weakest record from the past season gets to pick first, and then so on up the ladder. When all teams have made their selections a second round begins and this continues until seven rounds have been completed. Teams are allowed to 'horse trade' players and adjust their ranking position and an exhilarating day is had by all. I understand that FIFA is considering the same approach for next year - not really, just kidding.

The New York giants became the winners on February the 3rd against the favourites New England patriots.
