The Games Betting
The Games betting (Channel 4 and E4)
Channel 4's The Games is back on our screens this March. From the 13th on E4 and the 17th on Channel 4, this year's The Games will pit ten celebrities against each other in a test of sporting stamina and physical endurance. The Games is a celebrity TV show with a twist. Instead of abandoning various minor celebrities in the jungle to see who can most effectively boost their media visbility through participation in a series of bizarre tropical trials, The Games promises to show us how celebrities face up to each other in real-life sporting events. Contestants will compete in 18 events which promise to test the toughest of wills and separate the truly best from the truly b-list. Think of it as Pro-Celebrity Golf on (ahem) steroids.
The Games' Contestants, 2006
Our commentators for this year's celebrity fight-club will be the gorgeous Kirsty Gallacher and the ubiquitous Jamie Theakston, no strangers to the media spotlight themselves. As for contestants, expect the usual eclectic mix of ex-popstars, soap-stars, TV presenters and backbench politicians. Here is a full breakdown of competitors:
- Amanda Lamb - Presenter of Channel 4's A Place in the Sun, Amanda Lamb has spent years trying to persuade us to flog our homes and move abroad. Perhaps the sight of this former model and estate agent in tight-fitting Lycra can persuade us to stay. Not a strong favourite at the start of the games.
- Bernie Nolan - Best known today as Sergeant Sheelagh Murphy in ITV's The Bill, Bernie is an actress, singer, and former member of uber 70s pop babes The Nolans. She even has her own fitness DVD, so other contestants could be in for a run for their money.
- Javine - Coming more up to date with pop babes, we have Javine. Javine first came to light on Pop Idol when she missed a chance to become a member of Girl's Aloud. She has since developed her own solo career, including being chosen to represent the UK in this year's Eurovision Song Contest. Puts the fit into fitness, as the tabloids might say. Favourite for the women's contest.
- Michelle Gayle - The third songstress in the line up, Michelle had a string of R&B hits in the UK in the 1990s and is also remembered for her roles in BBC's Eastenders and Grange Hill. Let's see if her sweetness is her weakness in this year's games. Number 3 favourite to win the women's contest.
- Julia Goldsworthy - Julia may not have had any UK hits, but she is the current Lib Dem MP for Falmouth & Camborne. But is Goldsworthy worthy of a gold? Well the bookies are predicting silver with her current rank of second favourite.
- Adam Rickitt - Adam shot to fame as Nicky in Coronation Street, and, like many of the female contestants, also gained a lot of male attention when he launched his own pop career. Third favourite to win amongst the men.
- Jade Jones - The current favourite for an outright win in the men's events.
- JK - DJ JK (Jason King) co-presents the UK top 40 on BBC Radio 1 alongside Joel Ross. He has also presented on BBC3 and Granada Men & Motors as well as being an avid football fan. As far as the bookies are concerned, JK is not too high in the Top 10, being ranked fourth in the men's events.
- Peter Duncan - Actor and former Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan may be the outsider for the men's event, but he could have hidden reserves of energy from his days as frontman of BBC's Duncan Dares. If not, he can always make his own trophy out of old loo rolls and sticky back plastic.
- MC Plat'num - MC Platnum, AKA Marcel Somerville, from UK rap band Blazin Squad, is second favourite to win the men's events. Nuff said.
