L'Arc de Triomphe sure bets

As always there is fevered discussion about the contenders. The red-hot favourite this year, Zarkava, is ridden by Belgian jockey, Christophe Soumillon, who won his first race in 1997 at the amazingly young age of sixteen. Since then he has won a number of prestigious events and achieved Champion Jockey status three times in France. Zarkava, owned by the Aga Khan, has won her last six races and looks unbeatable but not since Urban Sea won in 1993 has a filly won the race. So far, 23 runners are entered but trainer, Ralph Beckett is considering supplementing (paying a fee and making a late entry) his horse, Look Here, with Oaks Trial winner Richard Hughes on board. Hughes has lots of experience at Longchamp and Look Here is a considered a contender after her strong showing for third place in the St. Leger.

Many people would like to see Mick Channon’s entry, Youmzain, take the honours this year. Mick was involved in a near fatal car crash in August and is still recovering. The horse is in good shape and, with a bit of help from some early rain, could go all the way. Ireland will be principally represented by Duke of Marmalade and Soldier of Fortune, both from the Aidan O’Brien stable. These are top horses and have shown this year that they aren’t just going to France for a nice day out.

Oh yes – don’t forget our very own Getaway out of the Andre Fabre stables. This horse is currently in the top six of the Arc De Triomphe Betting and not to ne ignored. And then there’s the French Derby winner, Vision D’Etat much vaunted by trainer Eric Libaud and surely benefitting from the support of the home crowd.
