The Australian Open takes place at the start of the year in January. It is the first of the four major grand slams and takes place at Melbourne Park, Melbourne in Australia.
Back in 1996 Melbourne Park was called the Flinders Park but was renamed after a major revamp and expansion, including a new Centre Court named the Rod Laver Arena after the great Australian player.
Melbourne Park has four tennis show courts, twenty outdoor courts and five indoor, including Rod Laver's Arena.

Favourite to win

Roger Federer, probably one of the greatest tennis players ever, still dominates the field, having won ten Grand Slam titles, forty seven Single tournament titles and seven Doubles tournament titles.
This year he will be hoping to win the French Open title in May.  So far this title has eluded him, he lost to Rafael Nadal who has won the French Open two years running.
Then in June at Wimbledon he will be hoping to break all records and win the tournament for the fifth time in a row.  If Fedderer does win the French Open in 2007, he will be the third man after Don Budge and Rod Laver to hold all four major Grand Slam titles in a row, including the US Open in which he has won three years running.

Number one seed Maria Sharapova was sensationally defeated in the Australian Open this year, 2007 by the unseeded Serena Williams who won it back in 2005. Maria was favourite to win but Serena out classed her on the day.  Other favourites to win would be Justine Hennin-Hardenne and Amelie Mauressmo who won it back in 2006.
