Who’d Bet Against The Rocket

April 16th, 2009 by Simon

Ronnie O’Sullivan starts his defence of the World Championship Snooker title this coming weekend, and who’d bet against him retaining his crown. Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ is without-doubt the biggest character on the snooker scene today and also the best player, which makes a welcome change. O’Sullivan (9/4) will meet fellow Englishman, Stuart Bingham (200/1), in the First Round proper at the Crucible this Saturday the 18th.

O’Sullivan’s main threat will stem from Mark Selby (15/2) – who O’Sullivan would meet in the semis if both players win their knockout games – and Stephen Maguire (15/2) – a Maguire and O’Sullivan final would be a tasty treat for all Snooker betting fans.

Outside bets on Chinese player Ding Junhui (16/1) and Mark Williams (25/1) look fanciful as both players are sperated from meeting O’Sullivan till the final. Former winners Stephen Hendry (40/1) and Graeme Dott (80/1) may also be likely interest bets, if they can get their game together.

I guess the only player who is likely to beat O’Sullivan is O’Sullivan himself. The Crucible has a way of bringing out the best in players but it can also bring out the worst characteristics in players as well. O’Sullivan cannot become demoralised and let his inner demons lose with the cue, if he does, then he’s ripe for the picking.
