The 96th annual Tour De France starts this Saturday (4th of July) and the main buzz around this year’s competition is the return of Lance Armstrong (7 times champion) from retirement to compete, once again, in the most gruelling of cycling races. The Tour De France is competed over 22 days and reaches its punishing end in Paris on the 26 of July.

During that time, the riders will have had to endure a staggering 21 meetings (races) and it is estimated that each competitor will burn an average of 7,000 calories per day. While all eyes will be on Armstrong as he battles to win overall the coveted ‘Yellow Jersey’ for an incredible eighth time, we also have a British interest in Mark Cavendish as he competes to win the ‘Green Jersey’, worn by the best sprinter of The Tour.

Lance Armstrong Eyes Tour De France 2009 Comeback

On September the 10th, a certain Lance Armstrong rocked the Cycling World when he announced he is coming out of retirement to race in next years (2009) Tour De France and attempt to win the event for an incredible 8th time. I’m pretty sure cycling betting enthusiasts are delighted at this news, as I was. But hold-on there, can this modern day American icon, really expect to do battle with the Alps and his Tour opponents and win? Without the aid of illegal performance enhancing drugs? That’s, what most sports journalists will be writing about. It makes you wonder if this is Armstrong’s final swan song to wipe away all those rumours and doubters over the doping accusations.

A Lot Can Happen in 3 Years

Retirement can be a funny thing. It can open doors for many to go and discover new environments and also themselves. For others, it’s a signalling of an end of something, they never really come to terms with in their day-to-day existence. Armstrong, has been out of the sport, professionally, for over three years and although I’m sure he is still fit and riding, three years away from top-class competition is bound to leave its mark somewhere.

There has been rumours that Armstrong will use this comeback to record a documentary of his training, the Tour De France 2009 race and also to prove he is clean by having the dope tests recorded as well. Whatever, Armstrong’s reasons for his announcement, it certainly has put the cat-amongst-the-pigeons and the eyes of the World will be watching this one play out until the 2009 Tour De France eventually reveals its champion to us all.
