That, Chris Iwelumo Miss!
October 14th, 2008 by AtticusDuring my years of playing (not so much now) and watching football, I have seen some great goals in my time and some absolute blatant misses. On Saturday, I watched the Scotland vs Norway, a 2010 World Cup Qualification game, and was amazed by what I saw. Chris Iwelumo, playing his first game for Scotland had the mother of all sitters.

Being a loss for words, doesn’t happen very often to myself, but I was so dumb struck after big Chris’ miss that I sat there trying to grapple with what just happened. The huge screen at Hampden, replayed the miss at least 5 times, while the game was still being played. It was if the guy in charge of the big screen, couldn’t get his thumb off the rewind button. Thousands of Tartan Army footsoldiers sat in static silence. On a Scottish Radio show, the commentators jumped and danced live on air for a solid 12 seconds, thinking Scotland and Chris Iwelumo had scored. Once realisation set-in they were stunned into silence.
Now, I’m pretty sure big Chris Iwelumo will bounce back. He’s a professional footballer and these things happen in football. I’ll leave it to George Burley, the current Scotland manager, to wrap up what he said about Chris Iwelumo’s miss in his post-match interview, “Big Chris would have probably scored that 99 times out of 10”. Think that says it all, doesn’t it.
