The Future of UK Horse Racing

November 13th, 2008 by Paul

Last week, at the Free Bets Blog, we touched on the pros and cons of all-weather horse racing tracks. Continuing with that theme, we wanted to look at the state of Horse Racing venues and what the future holds. Not far from where I live, barely a couple of miles, is an old abandoned racecourse called Bogside. The track is still visible in parts, but the stadia has eroded into a rubble landscape. At one time, Bogside racetrack served a number of communities and plenty of great meets were held there, including The Scottish Grand National. Now it lies in a silent, forgotten place. My trip down memory lane does have a point, however, when you realise that over the last eighty years only 1 new racecourse has been built.

Of course there are some beautiful racecourses spread over the country, these are almost like national treasures but there are many that are not-so-beautiful, struggling to cope with our worsening weather conditions, modern public safety demands and of-course our betting habits. Night horse racing betting is becoming ever-more popular, you just need to look at the popularity of nightly dog-meetings to know that there is a market there. But how many racecourses can meet that demand?

In order to satisfy night meets, racecourses would have to install floodlights and also look at re-turfing to all-weather tracks. But as the weather dictates more-and-more which racecourse will be open for business during the winter months – these are serious questions that course owners will be asking in order to survive and to escape from the way Bogside racecourse went.
