Melbourne Cup 2009 Betting Odds
October 29th, 2009 by Simon
The first Tuesday in November sees the richest two-mile handicap in the world take place, billed as the race that “stops a nation” it is widely known as the Melbourne Cup.
An anticipated 100,000 people will flock to Flemington Racecourse to watch the race with the remainder of Australia enjoying a bank holiday and a bet on the hopeful winner of-course.
Early betting has seen Alcopop (11-2), Viewed (6-1), Efficient (9-1) and Roman Emperor (10-1) instilled as favourites to win the Melbourne Cup.
However, short odds don’t count for much in this race. Previous winners, Viewed, Efficient and Delta Blues, all won the race at fairly sizeable odds, 47-1, 17-1 and again 17-1 respectively. With a pot of $5.5 million up for grabs, $3.3 of that going to the winner, you can begin to understand why the Melbourne Cup is such a massive event in the Australian sports calendar and to horse racing betting punters around the world.
