Will Cameras Kill Football Controversy?

September 23rd, 2008 by Paul

Another weekend has passed and more controversial decisions involving the match officials who referee our beloved game of football. This time is was Watford versus Reading in a Championship League game. In what can only be termed as ‘farcical’, Reading were awarded a goal when the ball had went out for a goal kick instead of between the goal posts by linesman, Nigel Bannister. Bannister later admitted that it was an ‘optical illusion‘ that made him signal that a goal had been scored.

Money Governs Football Top Levels

After this latest bluff, we have of-course, the ‘Goalmouth Cameras’ brigade up-in-arms, saying, nay, yelling, that the time is ripe to have these cameras mounted to help finally disperse these desperate decisions from ever happening again. Now, I totally understand their argument. When you consider the massive amounts of money now involved with the top tiers of football it is only right that contested decisions should be analysed by a third-eye and eliminating these mistakes from happening and changing the outcome of games and the fortunes of clubs suffering from bad decisions. Like I said, I fully understand but like hell will I ever agree with it.

Football American Style

Football and controversy go hand in hand. It is part of the make-up of the game which makes it so popular all over the World. Because, we now have the money men infiltrating the game they expect an Americanised grid iron view put into place. Where every tough call is fed into multiple cameras and a technician decides if the ‘ball crossed the line or not’. The game is then spoon fed to the fans and if there is more than, say, 3 or more controversial decisions in a 10 minute period, the flow-of-the-game would disappear. Not to mention the debate lost with football betting punters on a Saturday evening at the local pub as we all turn into the best talking punter, football has ever seen. No, you can keep your hi-tech cameras and give me controversy any day. Money has destroyed many things within football don’t let it destroy our talking points as well.
