Christmas Number One Betting 2008
Various Odds Given For The Christmas Number One 2008
Christmas comes but once a year and with it a licence for bands, singers, record companies, comedians and propeller heads to abandon all notions of good taste and quality and dig deep into a seething quagmire of sentimentality and sheer bad taste in their shameless intent to clamber over all the other contenders and reach the number one slot in the UK singles chart over Christmas. The general public are willing and enthusiastic accomplices in this peculiarly British celebration which amounts to a garish departure from the usual criteria for success in what is normally considered to be the most prestigious music chart in the world.
Still, it’s all good fun and it fits in with the pantomime spirit – or at least it used to before the X Factor came along. This vastly popular show cunningly times a release by its leading contender that is practically guaranteed to ride a wave of popularity right to the top of the charts at the crucial festive moment. This has become such an institution that it’s barely worth betting on and online betting sites are now offering prices on the number two slot which is certainly going to give you much better odds and a more challenging decision about who it’s going to be.
It’s all so much easier to place your bets these days with an online betting site for every taste. It’s a piece of cake to get signed up and there are generous incentives offered to new customers. It’s worth shopping around for the best odds and free bets and there are sites out there to help you with this. Nearly all online sites offer odds on the Christmas number one as well as just about every other event imaginable including betting on the weather with a White Christmas

Among the usual suspects this year, Take That are in with a reasonable chance with their classic dollop of predictable fare from their new album. It’s bound to get their army of female fans on the march to the record shops, if nobody else. Leona Lewis is being heavily tipped but online bookies remain unconvinced about her cover of Snow Patrol’s ‘Run. It depends how many of her X Factor fans still remember her. Madonna’s in there with her new song ‘Miles Away’ but, sadly, nobody is taking her seriously enough these days. Status Quo’s enduring classic, ‘Whatever You Want’ has been sampled by German, hardcore techno band, Scooter and this must be a contender. Boyzone features high in the bookies lists with Girls Aloud, Beyonce and the Sugarbabes not far behind.
Believe it or not, among the wackier but still strong contenders, , Ricky Hatton has recorded a novelty song called ‘Hi Ho Ricky Hatton’ based on Jeff Beck’s song ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’. God help us. Peter Kay must be worth a shot having teamed up with Gary Barlow for an, as yet unnamed, assault on the number one slot. Bob the Builder is threatening a New Year revival and is releasing ‘Big Fish, Little Fish’ which is aimed at small children’s dancing dreams. Gotta be worth thinking about. Sir Cliff Richard is also giving it a go this year but the less said about that the better.
