The top 125 points leaders following the final event of the regular PGA Tour season are entered into The Barclays. Following that the lowest 25 points leaders are culled for the Deutsche Bank Championship with a further 30 cut for the BMW Championship and just the top 30 players remaining for The Tour Championship where the FedEx Cup winner will be crowned.

The number of points awarded for finishing positions is increased dramatically – compared to regular tour events – for the FedEx Cup events. Therefore it is possible for any player who qualifies for The Barclays to win the FedEx Cup.

The FedEx Cup winner is deemed to be the player with the most points after The Tour Championship. He receives the FedEx Cup itself and 10 million US dollars in prize money. Second place in the points standings earns 3 million US dollars while third place takes 2 million US dollars and the prize money gradually decreases all the way down to 32,000 US dollars for those placed 126th to 150th.
