Goodwood Betting 2008
There is a temptation to compare Glorious Goodwood to the Royal Ascot meet in June but to do so would be to overlook the relaxed nature of this stylish and prestigious event which offers five days of races set in the picturesque Sussex Downs. Once famously described by King Edward VII as a garden party with racing tacked on, the Goodwood meet, coming six weeks after Ascot, attracts all the top horses for its 35 races with lots of opportunities for Goodwood betting fans to pit their wits against the bookies.
Goodwood Betting Opportunities
There are many more races to whet the appetite and, with 35 betting opportunities, it’s always worth checking the odds on offer from various online betting sites to get the best possible price for your fancy. Many sites will offer inside knowledge, gossip, tips, statistics and industry stories to help you make up your mind. It’s always worth keeping your eyes open for free bets on offer from online betting sites as an incentive to new customers.
The Goodwood Course and Races
The course itself consists of a six furlong straight with a rise to the top of the first furlong and then a slope downwards into the remainder of the course. Notable races are The Goodwood Cup, a Group 2 race and part of the British Stayer’s Triple Crown, run over two miles, The Gordon Stakes, a Group 3 race, over one mile four furlongs and the Group 3, five furlong, King George Stakes. All these races, plus the Group 2 Lennox Stakes, a seven furlong race, are for three-year-old and above thoroughbreds.
There’s plenty more to catch the eye of the Horse Racing Betting punter, including the one mile six furlong Lillie Langtry Stakes, a Group 3 race for fillies and mares. The Molecomb Stakes, one of the oldest of the Goodwood races, has been run since 1829 and is a Group 3 race for 2 year-olds and run over a distance of five furlongs.
The Stewards Cup is one of Europe’s top sprint handicaps and a highlight of the meeting. Run over six furlongs the pace is dramatic and the result is a unique race. The Vintage Stakes is run over seven furlongs and is widely regarded as an early outing for future Derby prospects.
Although the dress code is a bit more relaxed than Ascot, men still have to wear a jacket and a tie, cravat or polo neck sweater in the Richmond enclosure. Elsewhere the code is less stringent but the riff-raff are asked to tone it down a bit nonetheless. You can see the Solent from the top of the course and it’s easy to see why this is considered to be one of the most beautiful courses in the world.
Much of Glorious Goodwood will be televised so why not invite a few friends round for some bevies and a heated discussion about all the likely winners. You can also check out the latest tips and horse racing betting with a copy of The Racing Post to keep you right up to date.
It’s also a simple thing to sign up with an Online Betting site and then you’re only a few clicks on a laptop away from any wager you want to make.
