Up to 40 runners will line up at Aintree on Saturday 9th April aiming to negotiate 30 fences over a distance of just over 4 miles. Those fences include famous obstacles such as Becher’s Brook, The Chair and The Canal Turn.
There are 16 fences in one circuit of the Aintree course, the first14 of them are jumped twice with a famous long run in for the horses and their jockeys after the 30th and final fence.
The most famous of Grand National horses is undoubtedly the three-time winner Red Rum who won the race in back-to-back years in 1973 and 1974 and became the only horse to reclaim the race in 1977 after finishing second in 1975 and 1976. His trainer Ginger McCain co-holds the record of training four race winners along with trainers Fred Rimell and George Dockeray. Jockey George Stevens is the leading jockey after winning the race four times in the 19th century.
