NBA Basketball Betting 2009
The sporting arena of NBA basketball is proving an increasingly popular free betting pastime amongst the online betting community here in the UK thanks in no small part to the global network of cable and satellite sports channels that now have license to beam up-to-the-minute sports as it happens to subscriber's homes across the five continents. With virtually no sport left unavailable to those of us with a penchant for free bets, NBA basketball - once the preserve of the North American market along with ice hockey and baseball – nowadays benefits from widespread exposure throughout the world (212 nations, 42 languages), and as a result has become high profile and big business and hence attracting a new legion of Betting supporters, rapidly getting hooked on the high octane sport.
NBA (National Basketball Association) as is came about in 1946 in New York City (where its head offices are still situated) and comprises of 30 professional teams that are based in towns and cities across both America and Canada. Well, 29 are Stateside as such, whilst the Toronto Raptors are the sole representatives from Canada. NBA is an integral component of the four major North American sports leagues including Major League Baseball (MLB), National Football League (NFL) and the National Hockey League (NHL).
NBA Basketball League Split Into Two Conference Formats
Divided into the Eastern and Western Conference (with sub-divisions based on actual region – Atlantic, Central and Southeast for the Eastern, Northwest, Pacific and Southwest for the Western), NBA teams stretch from the Boston Celtics on the Eastern seaboard to the Golden State Warriors on the corresponding Western coast, whilst the typical season runs from November. 82 games are contested (41 home and away). During the course of an average season an NBA outfit will face opponents from its own division four times. Play-offs take effect from later April each year, which sees 8 teams from each conference going for the championship, which are played out in a tournament format.
Michael Jordan Helped Re-Brand The NBA Basketball Image Worldwide
Stars that helped catapult basketball into the spotlight such as Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neil, Magic Johnson and the somewhat larger-than-life, cross-dressing Dennis Rodman have been replaced in time by equally as bombastic characters never more than a hoop away from courting controversy like Kobe Bryant. Whilst the Chicago Bulls (who de-banded in 1998) were undoubtedly the team of the 1990s, latterly the LA Lakers have made all the running in successive NBA campaigns and raising the bar in the process.
Up until the late 1980s, the NBA teams were made up of predominantly home-grown players, yet a steady influx of overseas professional #basketball# league players have made their presence felt and contributed to the game during the past twenty years. Germany, Lithuania, Russia, Spain, Italy, France, Brazil, Serbia, Turkey, China and Argentina have all afforded the NBA divisions with enormously gifted and naturally talented basket-ballers in their own rights who have all brought another dimension to the all-American, college-based sport.
David Beckham's Appearance Heightens Awareness Of Basketball
The NBA Basketball word has gained the world's attentions from the indirect involvement of other headline sport-stars who have associated themselves with the game and therefore have helped put the NBA on the world map, subsequently meaning that contemporary basketball players have crept into the UK public's conscience almost by default, yet bringing the awareness to a whole new audience.
Football icons of the modern game, both in the English Premiership and further afield, are often snapped by the paparazzi sitting court-side at major games both home and abroad, with the revered likes of Chelsea's Didier Drogba, Barcelona's Thierry Henry and LA Galaxy and England's David Beckham confirmed fans of the sport. Indeed the crossover of contemporary sports biggest stars sharing the same sportswear manufacturer combined with the increasing use of viral marketing campaigns – especially amongst the online community – has witnessed such sights as Beckham himself attempting some hoops in the company of current NBA stars so as to gain new market coverage for the sports clothing company, yet at the same time furthering the awareness and appeal of the sport amongst less traditional yet fast emerging new audiences.
Continuing the football theme, and over the past few years more and more English Premier League clubs have been bought by wealthy American businessmen, all seemingly owners and patrons of successful classic American sport outfits. Take for example the Glazer family at Manchester United, who's interests back home include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (albeit an NFL outfit ), Aston Villa benefactor, Randy Learner, who's impressive portfolio includes ownership of fellow NFL side, the Cleveland Browns and Liverpool's joint US backers, George Gillett and Tom Hicks – between them accounting for two mainstream hockey teams and a major league baseball outfit; again all of which is priceless indirect publicity as hitherto all-American sports strengthen their foothold across new frontiers.
Celebrities Massive NBA Basketball League Fans
And then there's the American movie stars who pledge their allegiance to NBA teams at every opportunity, providing photo calls that are pure gold in terms of the club's PR. Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzil Washington and perhaps the best known celebrity basketball fan of them all, Jack Nicholson. Commited Los Angeles Lakers fans, they regularly attempt to go beneath the journalistic radar by hiding under baseball caps, and these Hollywood A-listers (along with bankable box-office commodities like Mark Wahlberg, Sylvester Stallone, Matt Damon and Tobey Maguire) inject further glamour into a sport that generates enough high adrenalin action all of its own.
Aside from the movie stars, there's the rock stars of the here and now. Rappers and stateside's most popular music royalty have been clocked attending crucial NBA basketball league and play-off encounters in their droves in recent seasons, including Justin Timberlake, P Diddy and Will Smith to name but three. Jay Z and Usher take their NBA obsession that stage further by co-owning the Jersey Nets and the Cleveland Cavaliers respectively. Elsewhere and Kanye west and Ice Cube have expressed more than a passing interest in the game.
Not to be left behind, and the urban music scene here in Great Britain is awash with predominantly American rap stars and their producers who are regularly seen sporting NBA league branded clothing when taking to the stage to perform, or simply photographed whilst out and about. Which in itself has given rise to spin-off NBA merchandising opportunities over the years. Not least when street fashion took its cue from basketball star of yesteryear, Michael Jordan, and his famous Nike-inspired logotype which was worn with pride – if not a whole lot of understanding – on just as many middle class parks as run-down estate courts during the 1990s.
So you can see for yourself the impact basketball has had on American culture and the gains it has made already across the pond by association if nothing else, as the current season steps up its inter-club rivalry and the sheer intensity of this historic competition continues to gain acknowledgment and momentum.
