Nobel Peace Prize Betting 2008

The Nobel Peace Prize is an annual award granted by a committee of five chosen from the great and the good of Norway and appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. The committee serves for a six year period and has a leader, currently Professor Ole Danbolt Mjos whose term of office ends this year. Nominations for the prize may come from former recipients and various worthies, including professors, judges and various special advisors. Politically-minded online betting fans should note that nominations need not be limited to individuals and can include organisations, groups of people allied in a cause or even a language – this year, included in the 193 nominations, Esperanto is up for the award.

Each Way bets in Nobel Peace Prize Betting 2008

Nobel Prize betting is pretty much limited to speculating on whom or what will win but some Online Betting sites offer each-way bets. Inside information suggests that the award will go to an individual connected to human rights issues this year. There has been much pussyfooting around keeping China happy during the build-up to the Olympic Games, held in Beijing this year, and the Nobel Committee might regard it as apt timing to underpin the human rights prodding that has been aimed at the Chinese authorities, over the last year or so, by honouring Chinese dissident, Hu Jia with the prize. The last time a Chinese person won the prize was in 1989 when the Dalai Lama was recognised. Another hot contender is Vietnamese dissident Thich Quang Do who has been fighting for democracy in Vietnam for over three decades now.

Contenders in Nobel Peace Prize Betting 2008

Well known peace activist, George Bush is a nominee for the prize. Yes, that’s right, George Bush . . . and Tony Blair. But then, Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin were nominees in their day too. Er . . . moving on, Bob Geldof and Bono are in with a shout although ex-pop stars are not normally favoured by the distinguished and elevated members of the committee. Zimbabwean, Morgan Tsvangirai is a prominent candidate. He’s had to put up with a lot of poop from Mugabe over the last year or two but doesn’t really fit the human rights model. Father John Dear is a Catholic peace activist who, unlike many religious figures today, favours non-violence in promoting American interests. He has been nominated by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and this must lend credibility to his cause.

No one is quite sure why Alfred Nobel chose peace as a prize category. He might have been feeling a bit guilty about inventing dynamite, gelignite and making a few zillion from selling armaments but who can tell? Interestingly, whereas the other Nobel prizes are dished out by the Swedish Government, he put the Peace Prize in the hands of the Norwegians. In those days, Norway and Sweden had very close links and Sweden acted on behalf of Norway when conducting foreign policy. This disconnection from the rest of the world would give Norway a more open approach to their award.

Some of the winners are a mystery and you wonder what the committee was thinking. Many successful nominees have caused much controversy and debate. Not least was when Henry Kissinger won the award causing the musician and satirist, Tom Lehrer, to remark that satire was now obsolete. In the end, there’s no doubt that this is a prestigious award which confers upon the individual winners the ultimate recognition of their lifetime achievements.
