The PDC World Darts Championship is regarded as the premier tournament in darts. The tournament was inaugurated in 1994 following the creation of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) as a breakaway organisation from the British Darts Organisation (BDO).

The PDC World Darts Championships are now traditionally held at Alexandra Palace over the Christmas period every year. For the first 14 years of its existence the tournament was held at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet.
