Premier League Winner Betting 2009-10

At the start of every Barclays Premier League season the bookmakers have their say on who will lift the Premier League trophy nine months henceforth. Only four teams have been successful in their quest so far; Arsenal, Blackburn, Chelsea and Manchester United and in recent years the realistic online betting odds have been restricted to the ‘Big Four’, and with good reason. However, the new found wealth of Manchester City has threatened to throw a cat amongst the pigeons and the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham are now threatening to pose a greater danger in coming years than they previously had.

United go top

08/03/2010

Manchester United have taken top spot in the Premier League with a narrow win over Wolves at the weekend. United were in danger of dropping points as the game looked like fizzling out into a 0-0 draw, but Paul Scholes’s 100th Premier League goal was enough to secure maximum points and send his side to the top of the Premier League table.  The Premier League Betting 2009-10 odds haven’t changed significantly as a result but United have shortened ever so slightly with a few of the online betting firms.

Coming up on the rail...

01/03/2010

After losing a number of lengths down the back straight Arsenal are beginning to finish like a train as both Chelsea and Manchester United make stumbling errors with the finishing line approaching. A first home league defeat of the season for Chelsea and a late penalty from Cesc Fabregas means that there are just three points separating the three clubs at the top and with Chelsea and Manchester United still to play each other Arsene Wenger will really fancy his side’s chances.

Arsenal had drifted out to as big as 30/1 in the Premier League Winner Betting 2009-10 after defeats against their title rivals, but having played all of their biggest games in one hectic January month, they now look the most likely to go unbeaten from now until the end of the season.

Advantage Chelsea

22/02/2010

An uncharacteristically poor performance from Manchester United at Goodison Park on Saturday lunch time handed the initiative to Chelsea in the Premier League 2009-10 title race. It was an opportunity which Chelsea weren’t likely to pass up and they restored a four point gap at the top with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wolves. Arsenal also won to close the gap on Manchester United and they will be hoping that their easier run in – they have played all of their fixtures against the ‘big four’ – can help them claim a much sought Premier League title.

Chelsea are now the red hot favourites in the Premier League Winner Betting 2009-10 and are as short as 1/2 with many online bookmakers. United have drifted to a best price 13/5 with totesport and Arsenal are creeping up the betting and are available at 6/1.

They couldn’t, could they?

11/02/2010

After heavy defeats against Manchester United then Chelsea it looked to be all over for Arsenal and their Premiership title aspirations. But neither Chelsea nor Manchester United could put the Gunners to the sword in midweek and have once again left the door ajar for Arsene Wenger’s men. They were written off by pundits, journalists, commentators and even fellow professionals just three days ago but many (myself included) could yet be forced to eat their words.

After beating Liverpool whilst their title rivals were dropping points at Villa Park and Goodison Park Arsenal have now been cut back into 8/1 in the Premier League Winner Betting 2009-10, and despite only drawing against Aston Villa, Manchester United managed to close the gap on Chelsea and shorten their odds into 5/4. The leaders have lengthened slightly but are still the odds on favourites at 10/11.

Drogba Double Delight

08/02/2010

Despite Arsene Wenger’s stubbornness Arsenal are surely out of the title race after another defeat at the hands of their London rivals. Chelsea took the lead early on through Didier Drogba then doubled it not long after and never looked back, although Arsenal dominated possession, only one statistic wins you football matches and that is the number of goals scored. Chelsea are now the 8/13 favourites to lift the Premier League trophy whilst Manchester United – who were 5-0 victors over Portsmouth – are 6/4. Arsenal’s slim chances are reflected in their 20/1 price tag whilst Manchester City are 150/1 after they relinquished any faint aspirations with a 2-1 defeat at Hull.

Chelsea rue missed opportunity

03/02/2010

Chelsea have failed to fully capitalise from their game in hand over their fellow title challengers. A Didier Drogba goal on his return from African Nations Cup duty was only enough to secure a point against relegation threatened Hull. It has thrown a life line to Arsenal who can go three points behind the leaders with a win over them on Sunday, but happiest of all will be Alex Ferguson whose Manchester United side are just two points from the Premier League summit. The bookies have reacted by pushing Chelsea out to 5/6 and shortening Manchester United and Arsenal to 6/4 and 9/1 respectively.

January Barclays Premier League Winner Betting 2009-2010

At the half-way stage of the 2009-10 Premier League season there are clear signs that this could be one of the most closely contested title races of recent times. In the space of a single week at the end of January there were three different league leaders, the first time that this has happened at this stage of a Premier League season and an indication of how tight it is at the top. Now the question for Football Betting fans is who will show the greatest consistency and go on to lift the trophy in May. Will it be the flair and flamboyance of Arsenal? Will Chelsea’s workmanlike grit and professionalism shine through? Or can Wayne Rooney inspire Manchester United to a fourth consecutive title?

Title challenge is a three horse race

I think that it is safe to say that the Premier League Winner Betting 2009-10 is now between three teams – Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. A rejuvenated Manchester City under the guidance of new manager Roberto Mancini will retain a modicum of self-belief but at 33/1 their slim chances are reflected in their price tag. The battle is realistically down to the efforts of the three teams who currently occupy the top three spots.

Arsenal were expected to falter without the goals of star striker Robin van Persie who was lost to injury in the middle of November, but since being defeated by Chelsea at the Emirates they have recovered the situation amicably and are now a serious threat to the other two challengers who might have discounted them at one stage. Chelsea remain the bookmakers Premier League Winner Betting 2009-10 favourites and with their strength and depth in numbers it is hard to argue with that assessment, especially having come through the month of January positively without their quartet of African players. Hard to contest unless your name happens to be Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United have themselves coped with a catastrophic list of defensive injuries at various stages throughout their season and have done well just to remain in the hunt. However, it is offensively where they could have issues, Wayne Rooney has stepped into the shoes of Cristiano Ronaldo and become their match winner but the potential problem comes if/when the England striker suffers a dip in form or an injury; no other player has consistently performed to his high standards this season.

This one could go all the way to the wire, but the coming weeks are the most crucial for Arsenal as they face Aston Villa, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool in the space of 15 days. The Gunners have struggled against their title challengers this season and four big games in a row could be a bridge too far Arsene Wenger’s men.
