In 1996 the top end of Rugby League competition in the northern hemisphere was consolidated into the Super League or Super League Europe (SLE) to give its full name. Super League Winners
The English teams come mostly from Yorkshire and Lancashire but Cheshire, Glamorgan and London are also represented. Rugby League has its roots in the working classes whereas Rugby Union tends to draw more for the middle classes who learn the game in public schools. In the course of their season, the Super League play 27 matches over 27 rounds from February to September. A major feature of the Rugby League calendar is the Rugby League World Cup which is held every five years or so and will be hosted in 2008 by Australia. This competition is fought between teams from Scotland, England, Australia, France, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Samoa.
