The leaders in the general classification and points classification categories have had a chance to earn their way to the top and it's at this stage where an outsider is unlikely to come through and disrupt this order.

By this stage it is quite amazing that a lot of the cyclists are still going. The Tour de France is a gruelling series in the respect that physically it takes everything out of the athletes who are racing so intensely on a day to day basis.

Tour de France Stages 16-21

Tour de France stages 16-21 are by no means the longest stages in the race series. This is due to the awareness of cyclists fitness as well as the three challenging mountain stages which make up stages 17, 18 and 19.

The tour de France stages 16-21 are; Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux (163km), Gap (179km – mountain stage), Pinerolo (189km – mountain stage), Modane (109km – mountain stage), Grenoble (41km – time trial) and Creteil (160km).

Tour de France stages 16-21 are held through the north of the country where the temperatures are predominantly cooler. This is why the last three mountain stages are held in this part of France.

Stages 16-21 Betting Strategy

By stages 16-21 it should be clear who is going to contend for the title in each different classification. There will be small groups of three or four cyclists who will all be in with a chance of winning each jersey.

The odds involved in stages 16-21 betting strategy are not going to be great because the field of potential winners will be dramatically reduced. Stages 16-21 are endurance based which means the fitter athletes should feature more prominently in each of the six stages.

Tour de France Favourites

The Tour de France favourites during stages 16-21 are not likely to be intent on winning the final stages. They will have accumulative time on their minds which is the most important issue when it comes to the general classification.

This is where one of the Tour de France favourites Alberto Contador has won previous titles. He has not been intent on winning a stage but puts in a good time. Trying to win one of the endurance stages takes up a lot of energy both mentally and physically so the smarter riders will focus on staying in the leading pack above anything else.

The main Tour de France favourites are also going to be contenders in the individual time trial (stage 20) because this counts towards accumulative time. This is one of the few stages where the leaders in the general classification will have a good chance to push home their advantage towards the end of Tour de France.

The Final Stages of Tour de France

The thing to remember about the final stages of Tour de France is that the favourites will not be going for the win. Pick the strongest sprinters for the two flatter races and the consistent endurance performers. Also be aware of the contenders in each of the classifications.
