US Golf Masters 2007
The first of the four major grand slams takes place this year in Augusta, Georgia.
From April 2nd ? 8th April.
Last years champion Phil Mickelson, the 36 year old left hander will be hoping to defend his title and retain the prestigious Augusta?s National Golf Club Green Jacket for another year, (the winner gets to keep the Jacket for only one year, and then it has to be returned to the Club.) His win last year, defeating Tim Clark by only two shots was a close nail biting finish.
This Tournament has always been a favourite not only for the players but for the spectators too. Set in beautiful grounds and surroundings, with the lush greens and vibrant gardens, it is a golfer?s paradise.
Prize money for this year?s competition will stay the same as last year. The winner will take home approximately £725.000.
US Masters History
The US Masters started in 1934. The Club was designed by the best golfer around at the time, Bobby Jones and a superb architect, Alistair Mackensie.
The first tournament played in 1935 was won by Horton Smith.
During the war the tournament was not played for three years but instead cattle and poultry were raised and bred on the grounds to help with the war effort.
In 1980, Seve Ballesteros was the youngest ever player to win the US Masters at the tender age of twenty three, then in 1997 the great Tiger Woods took away that record by winning the Masters at the age of just twenty one.
At the other end of the scale, Jack Nicklaus in the mid eighties won the Masters two years running at the age of forty six, goes to show any age can win this prestigious competition.
