US Open Tennis betting

The US Open tennis tournament is held annually in August/September and is the fourth of the ‘Grand Slam’ tournaments. It is one of the oldest tennis championships and is also the highest-attended of all annual sporting events in the world, playing host to more than 650,000 fans. As with other grand slam tournaments, the contest consists of five championships: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. There are also tournaments for wheelchair users and senior players.

US Open Venue

The tournament is played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in the Queens borough of New York City. It is played on an acrylic hard court in contrast to the clay of the French Open, the hard, plexicushion of the Australian Open and the grass at Wimbledon. The surface of the US Open courts consists of layers of acrylic, rubber, silica and other materials on top of an asphalt or concrete base. Compared with the hard Australian surfaces, the ball slows down slightly less on the bounce and bounces slightly lower on the acrylic court and thus suits the play of serve and volley players like Roger Federer.

Unique surface for the US Open tennis

Similar characteristics apply to grass play and, with Rafael Nadal finally beating Federer on grass at Wimbledon, it will be interesting to see the effect that this surface has on the outcome of their anticipated encounter at the US Open. Nadal had to absent himself from this tournament in 2007 after losing to 15th ranked David Ferrer in the fourth round. Although he admirably refused to use it as an excuse, the patella tendonitis in his knees undoubtedly played a part in his downfall. Although there is little doubt that he will dominate the play this time around, Roger Federer will be looking to hang onto this title for all that he is worth.

Mens favourites

Federer beat Nowak Djokovic in last years final and the Serb will be looking to renew his assault on the title again this year. Andy Roddick, on home ground, will be keen to make a serious challenge and this environment will be very helpful to his cause.

Womens favourites

The women’s single title has a wider field of contenders. Maria Sharapova and Justin Henin are favourites of most online betting sites with Serena Williams and Amelie Mauresmo close behind. Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams are snapping at their heels while, further out in the field, Jelena Jankovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova lurk menacingly. It’s a tough call so, unless your convinced, maybe keep an eye on the early rounds before committing your hard earned cash.
