US PGA Championship Golf Betting 2008

The PGA Championship, known as the US PGA Championship outside of North America, is one of the four golf majors and a very important date (7-10 Aug) on the international golfing calendar for Golf Betting enthusiasts alike. This tournament is part of the PGA Tour and occurs annually in August, four weekends after the British Open Championship and has a purse of about million.

Venues for the US PGA Championship

The tournament is held at one of a small number of prestigious American courses and this year sees Oakland Hills Country Club host the momentous 90th contest of the championship. Twenty miles north of Detroit, Oakland Hills is one of America's most venerable homes of golf. The field will play on the club's South Course which is now much tougher having been lengthened by 346 yards and with narrower fairways and more testing bunker placements, resulting in a seven-and-a-half thousand yard "monster".

The US PGA Championship is played on what have become typical American courses with fairways cut like greens and greens cut like mirrors. Weather rarely plays a challenging part and the demands of these courses are much more suited to American golfers who have dominated the event over the years with only nine foreigners having won the tournament since 1960. No British golfer has ever won the US PGA.

US PGA Championship Betting Favourites

Things might just be different this year, however. Barely half a dozen US golfers featured in the top thirty of the Open Championship. This is an unusually low number and, while the weather must be largely the cause, few Americans spring to mind right now, as strong contenders for this or any other tournament. Tiger Woods has won the last two but he's out of this year's event while he rests his recently operated-on knee.

As with the Open Championship, this opens the door for a number of contenders and top of the list must be the American, Rocco Mediate, who lost to Tiger in the play-off for the US Open. Only Rocco, Phil Mickleson and Jim Furyk feature in early betting for the PGA with non-US golfers heavily favoured by online betting site bookies. Ernie Els, VJ Singh, Sergio Garcia, and Padraig Harrington all feature in the lower odds on offer.

This tournament is the poor relation in the four major championships but it would be a mistake to underestimate it in terms of the challenge it represents for top golfers and the excitement that can be generated among Golf Betting fans. The competition is fierce and the incentive to win is enormous, particularly among the overseas contingent.

The whole thing will be shown on Sky TV so why not dig-in for the four days and enjoy pitting your wits against the bookies as play progresses.
