Padraig Harrington – USPGA Winner

August 11th, 2008 by FreeBetsmaster

Padraig Harrington has pulled off an amazing win in the USPGA Championship after a nail-biter of a final day which saw Spaniard, Sergio Garcia and American, Ben Curtis fall prey to the sheer determination of the Irishman to hold his ground and take the title. The significance of this win, marking the first time in 78 years that a European has won the competition, must not be underestimated by golf betting fans. Harrington, long seen as a top contender, has now won three of the last six majors and can now be viewed as one of the golfing greats.

Could The Tiger Have Stopped Hamilton?

Some will point to the absence of Tiger Woods as a factor in Harrington’s success. In doing so they would be wrong. Golf is the most difficult sport in the world and, given the skill that all top players possess, focus is all. Certainly Woods would have been in contention and given the Irishman a run for his money, but focus slips in the best of players. The Tiger hasn’t won every major he has competed in and Harrington, clearly at the top of his game, can rightly lay claim to his current supremacy.

US Ryder Cup Hopes Look Slim

Traditionally dominated by the Americans, this loss of the USPGA Championship to Harrington will be a severe blow to a US Ryder Cup team hoping to reverse recent European domination of the competition which takes place at in September at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky. Ryder Cup 2008 betting enthusiasts understand that, with Tiger Woods out of the game until next season and players like Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose playing out of their socks right now, the Americans will be wondering where any hope of victory is going to come from.
